Chokepoints: Pausing Seattle streetcar project the right move

Apr 12, 2018, 12:27 PM

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan’s decision to suspend the latest streetcar project is the right move, KIRO Radio’s Chris Sullivan says.

For starters, the cost of the Center City Connector project increased from $150 million to more than $200 million.

“The City of Seattle has a critical obligation to spend taxpayer dollars wisely and an equal obligation to transparency,” Mayor Durkan said at the time. “There are too many questions about the true costs of this project and the risks to taxpayers, which is why we must put the brakes on this project. As your new mayor, I will continue to scrub our budgets and act to protect taxpayers.”

It has left some, including Sullivan, wondering if someone fudged the numbers when the project was presented to the city council.
