Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA 5th District) is one of two Washington Republicans congressmembers who voted to deny Trump an emergency declaration at the border. She joined The Jason Rantz Show to discuss her vote and whether she’ll support Jay Inslee’s run for president. Spoiler alert: she won’t.

“This was a tough vote for me. I am 100 percent for President Trump’s wall and I have voted over a dozen times for border security measures for the wall,” she said.

“I’m also 100 percent for the constitution and that’s where my vote was to disapprove of this unilateral executive overreach, and it had nothing to do with the merit or the need to build President Trump’s wall. It was really about our constitution and what I believe is our this body’s Article one powers to make the laws and to use the the power of the purse.”

The House passed the resolution blocking Trump’s declaration 245-182. Rodgers believes that the Democrats’ intransigence on the issue of immigration somewhat forced Trump into this, but is ultimately concerned about a future Democrat president abusing it such powers.

“I am supporting reform of the Emergency Powers Act to clarify and to make sure that Congress is a part of these decisions moving forward,” she said. “Rather than being put in this position to approve or disapprove after the president’s already made a declaration.”

On that note, Rodgers is not too fond of the idea of a President Jay Inslee having that kind of power, and doesn’t plan to joined the 0 to 1 percent of people polled who would currently vote for him.

“He said he would look at this executive order and use it for the issue of climate change,” she noted. “Oh my, you know I will not be supporting Jay Inslee for president. But it gives us an opportunity for a new governor in Washington state, so that’s exciting.”

Seeing the wall through, and the strength of the economy are why she’ll continue to support the president.

“I believe that Trump has done a great job with the economy, on getting people back to work. You look at the unemployment numbers are at a record-low,” she said.

“African-Americans are at a record low unemployment, Hispanics, people with disabilities, it’s the lowest level in 40 years, and I believe President Trump deserves a lot of credit for the work that he did to zero in on tax reform, lifting the regulatory burden, and creating hope and optimism in our economy.”
