Frustrated commuters trying to get noticed in Sumner

If you see #sumtraffic pop up on Twitter, it’s not #sometraffic misspelled. The city of Sumner is hoping to get attention with the hashtag in an effort to encourage legislative help with their growing traffic issue.

Sumner itself is beautiful and whether you live there or are just driving through to get furniture (I’m looking at you Old Cannery) you’ve probably been stuck in traffic, most likely on the ironically named Traffic Avenue.

The Tacoma News Tribune spoke to the mayor of Sumner, Dave Enslow who said, “Locals blame commuters, while commuters blame trucks, cut-through traffic or few options. The truth is we all need that interchange, and, in fact, we all need each other.”

The magical interchange in question would add more lanes to the Traffic Avenue/East Main overpass and would likely cost around $15 million.

The goal of the Twitter hashtag #sumtraffic is to have drivers and business owners post their negative experiences so officials will hopefully prioritize funding for the interchange.
