Ballard Kids Play Football in the Dark After Copper Theft
Somebody pried open an electrical box at Loyal Heights Playfield in Ballard and cut out the copper wire. Now a bunch of kids run football drills on a dark field. In Federal Way, WSDOT has stopped replacing stolen freeway light wiring because the thieves just come back.
The fix King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion is pushing is simple — recyclers photograph copper, upload it to a searchable database, and hold it 10 days so detectives can check it against theft reports. Pawn shops already follow similar rules. It worked for catalytic converters. Charlie Harger on why this bill already died once in Olympia and why it needs to pass early next session.
