Art Institute student dies of gunshot wound after ‘random’ attack

Apr 25, 2012, 5:39 PM | Updated: 9:59 pm

She was only 21 years old and had just moved to Seattle to study at the
art institute, but a gunshot proved fatal for a young women walking home
early Sunday.

Nicole Westbrook died of complications due to her gunshot wound at
Harborview Medical Center just four days after what police call a
‘random’ attack.

Police say Westbrook was walking home from a club Sunday morning
with her boyfriend when shots were fired from a passing car.

Westbrook had moved to Seattle from Albuquerque three weeks ago to
go to school. “My sister is the most beautiful person that you’ll ever, ever
know and meet, and I’m proud she’s my baby sister,” said her sister,
Marcia.

Westbrook’s family stood alongside Mayor Mike McGinn and Police
Chief John Diaz Tuesday, urging an end to the gun violence that has
torn their lives and the city apart.

Police believe the shooting was random, and they don’t have any
suspects. The shooting was caught on nearby surveillance video.

The mayor’s office and SPD are asking witnesses to come forward with
any information they might have. The shooting is one of several crimes
involving gun violence that have prompted increased police patrols.
