Fact-checking bogus statements could save this country yet

I have seen some pretty incredible news stories in the past 24 hours. Reporters quoting Republican sources who have been speculating on the possibility of replacing Donald Trump!
One story even described how the Republican Party might hold a do-over convention.
Now, I know we all want to witness history being made, but really, how much history-making can one nation stand?

I can see why people want to bring this campaign back under control. But there must be a better way. So allow me to present an idea from Sacramento listener Marti.
Marti works with local politicians and she called me with an idea for a whole new debate format that would return some sanity to the process.
“The new format that I can envision is one in which a moderator asks the question and gets three responses, one from Clinton, one from Trump, and one from a small fact-checking team, that would on the spot check the answers that were given by Trump and Clinton.”
How about that? Real-time fact-checking to the candidate’s faces!
So instead of finding out the next day that half of what they said was bogus, the fact checkers would tell us right away.
A friend at the Washington Post tells me his paper would be delighted to play that role — and to be fair you could rotate fact checkers for each debate. The Post could do one, Fox News could do one, heck — I wanna see Judge Judy do one!
We could save this country yet.
