Will the Mariners’ Safeco Field get the name T-Mobile Stadium?

Nov 15, 2018, 11:27 AM | Updated: 12:31 pm

As soon as news broke that T-Mobile is taking over the highly coveted naming rights for the Mariners’ stadium, officials pushed back.

Soon, Safeco Field will not be known as such. A new name for the sports arena has yet to be determined. Forbes reported Thursday that T-Mobile has nabbed the naming rights to the baseball stadium. Forbes also reports that the new name will come with a $6 million price tag — annually.

But the Mariners argue that the reporting in Forbes is not entirely accurate. A Mariners official told KIRO Radio that the fee cited in Forbes is not a fact, and that there is no official agreement for a new naming rights partner. Officials have yet to even vote on an agreement. That could happen in November or December.

The Seattle Time further reports that naming rights deals can’t be made official until “the recently-amended and agreed-upon 25-year lease agreement with Public Facilities District is finalized in a formal vote by the Metropolitan King County Council.”

Safeco opted not to renew its naming agreement with the Mariners in 2017, spurring speculation over who would take over. Safeco held the title for 20 years.
