Bomb threat reported at high school in Des Moines

Feb 27, 2015, 9:50 AM | Updated: 12:01 pm

Classes have been canceled at Mt. Rainier high school in Des Moines following a bomb threat Friday morning.

Students were dismissed at 11 a.m. If they wish, parents can pick up their children at Midway Elementary School. Buses will depart from Pacific Middle School.

Officers responded to the school after receiving calls around 8 a.m.

“Mt. Rainier High School staff took prompt action and evacuated the kids to a safe location,” said Des Moines Police Chief George Delgado.

Des Moines police and K-9 units are conducting an investigation on campus.

“At this time, we have no reason to believe that the threat is credible. But we’re going to take every measure to make sure that is in fact true,” said Delgado.

The bomb threat in Des Moines is one of three threats made at schools around the Puget Sound area in the past two days.

Rumors of a shooting at Interlake High School in Bellevue surfaced on Facebook early Friday. Police quickly discredited the threat after responding to the scene.

Extra police were on hand at Rogers High School in Puyallup Friday morning, following the discovery of a threat Thursday afternoon.

KIRO TV reports the threat written on a bathroom wall said, “Roger’s school shooting to happen on 2-27-15 during 1st lunch.”

Despite the threat in Puyallup, Pierce County Detective Ed Troyer said he believed it would be safe for kids to attend classes Friday.
