KIRO Radio’s John Curley has been mugged – not once, but three times. In New York, Philadelphia, and most recently, five years ago in Boston.
“It was three black kids trying to join a gang. It was called Knockout King,” John explained. “If you can knock someone out with one punch, you can get in the gang, but if you can’t knock them out with one punch, you have to find somebody else.”
The game encourages kids to pick on unsuspecting individuals. John wasn’t paying attention when out of no where, he was sucker-punched in the gut.
The pain came so sudden and so fast, that at first, he thought he’d been stabbed.
The boy who had punched him wasn’t successful at knocking John down, but that didn’t stop the boys from taunting him to fall over.
Attacked out of no where, John wasn’t armed when punched in Boston. But after that experience, another mugging, and even another attack that left him hospitalized, he said it would have gone differently if he had been armed.
