Hypocrisy, irony behind Muslim billboards in Seattle

If you drove around Seattle over the past few days you might have seen some new, curious billboards.

One says: “Islam: the Message of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad. 877-WHY-ISLAM. Free Quran. Ask Any Question.” This is one of four billboards that have gone up around the area as part of a national campaign to counter the negative perceptions of Islam.

And part of this was inspired by the bad press the religion received after the Charlie Hebdo attacks, after 9/11, after the Chattanooga Tennessee murders. There’s no doubt whatsoever that this religion has a public relations problem.

“American Muslims must take a stand against all of these atrocities,” Naeem Baig told the Seattle Times, speaking of terrorist attacks that were committed by Muslim extremists. He is the president of the Islamic Circle of North America, the group behind these billboards.

But with respect to him, his group isn’t taking some bold stand against terrorists. These billboards make no meaningful mention of their stances against terrorism that are committed in the name of Islam. Instead, they kind of dance around the topic.

One of the billboards says: “Muhammad always taught: ‘Love Not Hate; Peace Not Violence.'”

But that’s hardly a condemnation.

Wouldn’t condemning the acts strongly be the biggest and most bold move they could make? Because a huge criticism &#8212 a valid one &#8212 is that when a Muslim terrorist commits acts of terror, the Muslim community doesn’t seem all that outraged in a united voice. And often times the response will be to point to a few leaders who do speak out &#8212 and they should absolutely get credit &#8212 but with more than 1.5 billion Muslims in the world, pointing to a handful of Muslims who speak out just won’t cut it if your purpose is to change the perception of Islam.

Related: Is Seattle’s mayor kowtowing to Sharia law?

What I find most astonishing is that if you visit the website the website on the billboard, they bury the topic at the very end. It’s in the small text at the bottom of the site and it’s the last section.

Now, to their credit they point out some quotes from the Quran that put in perspective their take on what their religion says about terrorism, but why is it buried? The single best thing you can do for Islam is to condemn terrorist acts done in the name of your religion.

But instead of proudly and loudly condemning these acts on some of their billboards or on their website, they treat it like an afterthought.

Now, in Seattle, because the population is so progressive ideologically, they go out of their way to cater to this particular religion because they’re a minority here, which means they need the white progressive activist to look out for them (in the minds of the condescending white progressive, at least).

Mayor Ed Murray last week announced he was helping to come up with Sharia compliant loans so Muslims can buy homes (as a Muslim, if you follow Sharia law, you’re not allowed to pay interest on loans). I support this idea because I’ll happily allow any citizens, regardless of their religion, to purchase a home and help this economy.

But what I find odd is the irony in them fighting so hard for a religion that is so against their ideological beliefs. Because even though the terrorism topic isn’t front and center on their website, an article on “An Islamic Perspective on Sexual Deviation” is.

And in this piece, it calls homosexuality an abnormality.

Emotional betrayal, mental illness, family disruption and even violence are the likely outcomes of such deviant behavior. In the long run, such deviations may become so intrinsically accepted in societies that they lead to other abnormalities in the name of freedom and individual happiness, as we are currently seeing in the case of homosexuality.

They say that even if you’re “predisposed” to being gay, you have to keep such tendencies “under check” and that they can be “overcome.” They also speak out against sex outside of marriage and push for pro-creation.

Can someone out there who is progressive explain to me why you’re such a strong defender of Islam exactly? Isn’t it odd that this is the message in Seattle?

The funny thing is PC-progressives will stand up for Islam even though the Muslim faith stands against everything the Progressives believe in. Why do they have tolerance for Muslims but not really for Christians? Mayor Murray will help establish Sharia compliant loans but stopped city dollars flowing to Indiana over their religious freedom law.
