From Super Mario to Washington's Top White Wine
Of all the white wines produced in Washington, only one earned a top score from the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards — often called the Oscars of the wine world — and the story behind it is even better than the trophy.
The grapes that made it were planted by the late Mario Segale, the Tukwila real estate developer who unknowingly became the namesake for Nintendo's most famous character (Super Mario) after renting warehouse space to Nintendo of America back in 1981. His son Mark Segale joins Seattle's Morning News to tell the full story behind Frenchman Hills Vineyard, the family's remarkable Italian roots, and the 96-point Riesling that just put a Grant County estate on the international map.
