SR 302 Loses a Lane—Drivers Call It "Stupid"

WSDOT removed the right lane on SR 302 heading south from the Purdy Bridge to SR 16 near Gig Harbor last month, and drivers are not happy. The lane has been converted into a bike and pedestrian lane on a road that sees about 20,000 vehicles a day—but very few cyclists or pedestrians.

WSDOT says the change was about safety, not bikes. Drivers were speeding in the right lane and illegally blowing through the exit-only turn at Burnham Drive to cut ahead of traffic at the merge. By removing the lane, WSDOT says it eliminates those dangerous last-minute merges and reduces speeding.
