Why US 2 Is About to Be a Construction Zone Until 2027
Construction starts Monday on a major safety and traffic improvement project along US 2 near Sultan. WSDOT has a long list of upgrades planned, including a new roundabout at Old Owen Road, new sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, signs, rumble strips, and changes to no-passing zones.
First up is a bypass lane that will route traffic around the roundabout construction. Nightly closures will be in place Sunday through early Friday while that lane is built. During the day, traffic will be managed with temporary signals. The biggest impact will be on westbound US 2—the left-turn lane onto Fern Bluff will close, and Fern Bluff Road will have a long-term closure at the intersection. A detour will be in place.
The roundabout should be done by the end of February, but the larger corridor project will continue through 2027. The new roundabout is designed to ease those brutal Sunday backups, and center-lane rumble strips aim to reduce the head-on crashes that happen all too often on the dark highway.
Expect daytime and nighttime closures throughout the entire project.
